Abasiono breaks 20-year old 400m hurdles Auburn University record

Ashe fails to finish in the 100m

Abasiono Akpan broke Auburn University’s 20-year-old freshman school mark in the 400m hurdles at the Tom Jones Invitational meet held at the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida over the weekend.

The 22 year old posted a time of 56.93, surpassing the previous record of 57.81 held by Josanne Lucas (2003). It is also her second fastest time in the event after the 56.83 she ran last December to win the 400m hurdles title at the 21st National Sports Festival in Asaba, Delta state.

The Nigerian was also among the quartet of herself, junior Ashantae Harvey and freshmen Arianna Sharpe and Amirah Sharpe ran the fastest Auburn women’s 4x400m relay in 12 years, crossing in 3:32.00 to finish sixth in a very competitive field.

Meanwhile, Favour Ashe failed to finish the 100m race, his first individual race of the outdoor season.
