Adeshina equals Championships record to win third High Jump title

Amusan wins historic fourth straight 100m hurdles title; Adeshina, Chukwukuelu win first Nigeria Championships titles

Nigeria High Jump record holder (1.97m), Temitope Adeshina cleared 1.95m to equal the Nigeria Championships record set by Doreen Amata in July 2008 in Abuja on her way to winning her third straight high jump title.

Ajagbawa Francess cleared 1.75m to place second with Ewa Peace third after soaring over 1.70m before landing on the foam.

Adeshina, 25, who set the new Nigeria record in the event early this month at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships enroute her historic bronze medal win, was the strong favourite for the title and she did it in style and in the process became one of only four athletes to win the title at least three consecutive times after Ifeanyi Aduba, Nneka Ukuh and Amata.

In the 100m hurdles, reigning world record holder (12.12), Tobi Amusan made history as the first Nigerian high hurdler in recent memory to win the event four consecutive times.

The 27 year old former world champion ran 12.78 to win ahead of her likely successor, Adaobi Tabugbo who sped to a 13.33 finish to finish second while Faith Osamuyi came in third in 13.52.

In the men’s Discus throw, US based Israel Adeshina threw 52.69m to win his first Nigerian Championships title on his debut in the competition. Onukwe Ifeanyi came in second with his 49.60m effort while Obiajunwa Chukwuma finished third in 45.89m.

Adeshina, hoping to change allegiance from the USA to Nigeria came to the championships as the favourite following his 54.17m throw last month in Cleverland, USA.

Like Adeshina, Alex Chukwukelu also picked his first Nigerian title, running 13.92 to win the 110m hurdles ahead of Wisdom Great Musa who came through in 14.44s to place second.
