Adeshina Faces Record-Breakers in Bowerman Finalist Battle

Nigerian high jumper Temitope Adeshina is among ten women named semifinalists for the prestigious Bowerman Award, but her path to the final three will be fiercely contested by record-breaking rivals in sprint and distance events.

Adeshina completed an undefeated collegiate season, sweeping the NCAA DI Indoor and Outdoor high jump titles. Her clearance of 1.97m indoors tied her for fifth on the all-time collegiate list, while her outdoor best of 1.96m secured the national crown and the yearly lead.

Her dominance has made her one of the standout names in this year’s Bowerman race.

Yet, history shows that Bowerman voters often favour athletes who not only win titles but also redefine the limits of their disciplines.

Among those who could deny Adeshina a place in the final three are Jane Hedengren of BYU, who shattered collegiate records in the indoor 5000m, outdoor 5000m, and 10,000m while becoming the first freshman to sweep the 3000m and 5000m titles indoors.

Her versatility and record-breaking feats make her a formidable contender.

Another strong rival is Adaejah Hodge of Georgia, who set collegiate records in both the 100m and 200m at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

She became the first woman since Dawn Sowell to hold both sprint records simultaneously, a historic achievement that has placed her firmly in the spotlight.

Also in contention is Sanu Jallow-Lockhart of Arkansas, who smashed the collegiate 800m record with a 1:56.85 run, eclipsing the mark set by 2021 Bowerman winner Athing Mu.

Her dominance in the mid-distance events, combined with relay success, makes her a serious challenger for a finalist spot.

The three women’s finalists will be announced on June 29, with the Bowerman Award presented in December at the USTFCCCA Convention in Grapevine, Texas.
