Adeshina Makes History with Nigeria’s First Commonwealth High Jump Medal
Temitope Adeshina etched her name into Nigerian athletics history on Tuesday by becoming the first Nigerian woman to win a Commonwealth Games high jump medal after claiming bronze at the Glasgow 2026 Games.
The 27-year-old cleared 1.90m to finish third behind Australia’s Eleanor Patterson and Nicola Olyslagers, delivering Nigeria’s first-ever medal in the women’s high jump at the Commonwealth Games.
Patterson equalled the Games record of 1.96m to take gold, while Olyslagers secured silver with a clearance of 1.93m.
Adeshina entered the competition as one of Nigeria’s strongest medal hopes after an outstanding season and lived up to expectations with a composed performance.
She negotiated 1.82m at the first attempt, cleared 1.87m on her second effort and needed all three attempts before successfully going over 1.90m to secure a place on the podium.
The Nigerian could not clear 1.93m, but her bronze medal represents another landmark achievement in a career that has continued to rise rapidly.
Having previously become the first Nigerian woman to clear the 2m barrier, Adeshina has now added Commonwealth Games history to her growing list of accomplishments.
