AFCON 2023: Peseiro says Super Eagles want beat Cameroon and stay until the end

Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro says the team simply want to defeat Cameroon when both sides clash in the round of 16 of the 2023 African Cup of
Nations (AFCON) on Saturday.

Peseiro who was speaking at the pre-match press conference on Friday also said that the Super Eagles of Nigeria want to stay put at the 2023 AFCON until the
end of the tournament.

‘It will be a difficult match. We are in the round of 16 and playing against a great team. We do not want to concede, we want to score a goal and maintain
our lead,” Peseiro said.

“We expect that history will not repeat itself at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny. Even if the statistics are not for us, we are going to play,” the
Portuguese said at the presser.

“It is a mission that has been entrusted to us and we are going to try to carry it out. We want to win and we want to stay in this tournament until the end,”
Peseiro told reporters.

With Victor Osimhen having scored only once in open play in the group stage – against Equatorial Guinea in their opener – many are wondering whether the 25-
year-old will replicate for the Super Eagles the form that made him last season’s leading scorer in Serie A with Napoli.

Peseiro is however confident the 25 year old will shine as he looks for the tactical key to unlock the potential of what should be the tournament’s most
potent strike force.

‘With eight Afcons between the two teams, it’s going to be a tough match against Cameroon,’ Peseiro said. ‘We must focus, we must sacrifice, we must fight
for each other. We know the history [of the 1984 loss] but Saturday is the match.’
