Amusan set for 8th career title defence, on the cusp of history

Sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan will be looking to make her seventh successful title defence when she runs in the final of the 100m hurdles Wednesday at the ongoing 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana. The 26 year old will also be making history if she wins for the third time in the event at the Games.

Amusan is bookmakers overwhelming favourite to successfully defend her title and become the first woman to win a 100m hurdles gold three times consecutively. She will also be the second Nigerian woman to do so after Vivian Chukwuemeka and third Nigerian after Chukwuemeka and Adewale Olukoju.

If she wins, it will be her seventh successful title defence after she successfully defended two Nigerian Championships for a hat-trick of wins, two Diamond League titles also for a hat trick of wins, one Commonwealth Games and one African Championships. She has faltered only once in a title defence and that was at the last World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary in 2023.
