Awoniyi named in Alan Shearer’s EPL Team of the Week

Nigerian features alongside Haaland and Almiron in a three-man attack

Forward Taiwo Awoniyi has become the second Nigerian player this season after Everton’s Alex Iwobi to be named by Alan Shearer in his best XI of Matchweek 13 of the Premier League.

Awoniyi scored the only goal of the game when his side, Nothingham Forest tore form books into shreds with their 1-0 defeat of Liverpool at the City Ground on Saturday.

It was the Nigerian’s third goal of his first Premier League campaign and two of the goals have fetched the relegation haunted Forest six points so far this term.

Shearer, the Premier League all-time top scorer with 260 goals from 441 appearances picked the Nigerian among his three forwards in a 3-4-3 formation.

Awoniyi will strike together with Manchester City’s scoring machine, Erling Haaland who netted a brace against Brighton to take his tally to 17 in just 11 games and Newcastle’s Miguel Alomiron who scored the winner at Tottenham.

“It’s not every day you score the winner against Liverpool!,” Shearer wrote about the Nigerian on the official website of the Premier League.

Shearer is the second former Premier League legend to pick Awoniyi as one of the best players from the matchweek 13 fixtures.

Former Man United and Tottenham player, Gareth Crooks also named the Nigerian in his team of the week for the BBC.

Awoniyi has now featured 11 times in his debut season in the competition. He has started five of the games, scored thrice and yet to bag an assist.
