Awoniyi Replaces Osimhen in Nigeria Squad For 2027 AFCON Qualifiers
Coventry City striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been called up to replace Victor Osimhen in Nigeria’s squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
Awoniyi returns to the Super Eagles squad after nearly two years away from international football.
The 28-year-old last represented Nigeria in October 2024, when he played for 16 minutes in the Super Eagles’ 1-0 victory over Libya in an AFCON qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
His latest call-up comes after Osimhen was ruled out of the upcoming qualifiers.
Awoniyi has made nine appearances for the Super Eagles, starting five of those matches, and has scored two goals.
The Coventry striker will now provide another attacking option for Nigeria as the Super Eagles continue their qualification campaign for the 2027 AFCON.
