Cabo Verde Hold Spain in Historic World Cup Debut

FIFA World Cup debutants Cabo Verde produced one of the most memorable performances of the opening round, holding reigning European champions Spain to a 0-0 draw at Atlanta Stadium.

A nation of just over 500,000 people, Cabo Verde defied the odds with a sensational defensive display that frustrated Luis de la Fuente’s star-studded side.

Spain dominated possession but were repeatedly denied by the inspired form of 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, who was later named Player of the Match.

Spain’s best first-half chances came when Ferran Torres rattled the crossbar and Mikel Oyarzabal’s follow-up header was brilliantly saved by Vozinha.

Even the introduction of teenage sensation Lamine Yamal in the second half could not break their resolve, as Spain’s attacks lacked the final touch. Oyarzabal missed another late opportunity, ensuring Cabo Verde claimed a famous point.
