Can Elo Joseph Join Nigeria’s Exclusive Sub-23 Seconds Club at Tyson Invitational?

All eyes will be on Esther Elo Joseph this Saturday evening (Nigerian time) at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, as the 22-year-old Nigerian sprinter attempts to break into the elite sub-23 seconds club in the women’s 200m.

Joseph has been in scintillating form this season, storming to a lifetime best of 23.11 seconds over the distance at the Clemson Invitational last month.

Even more impressive was her 36.41 run in the indoor 300m and her 51.36 personal best in the 400m indoors. Track watchers believe she is capable of dipping under 51 seconds in the 400m and under 23 seconds in the 200m, making Saturday’s race one to watch.

Only three Nigerian women have ever broken the 23-second barrier in the 200m, and Joseph is eager to become the fourth.

While Favour Ofili’s Tyson Center record of 22.36 seconds may be beyond her reach at this meet, Joseph’s steady progression suggests history could be within touching distance.

She will not be the only Nigerian on show in Fayetteville.

Teenager Chioma Nwachukwu is expected to build on her 23.43 personal best, while Victory Godah will line up in the same heat as Joseph. Rejoice Sule, with a season’s best of 23.84, is also listed to compete.
