Celtic Face Transfer Battle to Retain Iheanacho After Contract Lapse

Celtic are facing a battle to retain striker Kelechi Iheanacho after allowing his contract option to expire, opening the door for rival clubs across Europe to make a move.

The 29-year-old Nigerian forward joined the Scottish champions last summer on a one-year deal following his departure from Sevilla.

While not initially seen as a marquee signing, Iheanacho quickly proved his worth, playing a decisive role in Celtic’s domestic double triumph. His goals in the title race and crucial strikes in both the Scottish Cup semi-final and final cemented his reputation as a big-game performer.

However, Iheanacho was absent when players reported for pre-season training, with his contract having officially expired.

Celtic’s failure to trigger the extension clause has left manager Martin O’Neill eager to secure a new agreement, though competition is expected from clubs in Turkey and elsewhere in Europe.

Former agent John Inglis urged Celtic to act swiftly: ‘Celtic should absolutely look to keep Kelechi. He loved playing for the club last season and thrived in the big moments. He’s a brilliant finisher in the box.’

Inglis also stressed the importance of a full pre-season for the striker, noting that Iheanacho has struggled in recent years to build fitness after missing early preparations.

Despite no longer representing the player, Inglis added: ‘Everyone saw how good he can be. He’s a big-game player and a tremendous pressure moment finisher. If Celtic want him, they need to move quickly.’
