Chukwuebuka opens 2023 indoor season with new Shot Put National Record
Irish girl, Adeleke runs new 200m PB and World lead; Ofili splits 51.28 in 4x400m
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi opened his 2023 indoor season Friday with a new Nigeria indoor record in the Shot Put.
The 29 year threw 21.20m at the Iowa-Recreation Building, Iowa City, Iowa, USA to break the 21.11m Nigeria record Stephen Mozia set in January 2016 at Nashville, Tennessee.
Chukwebuka seemed to be a man on a special mission at the meeting and he opened his bid for the first position with before He threw the Nigerian record setting mark in his second attempt and threw three more times above 21m to win the event ahead of Roger Steen (20.59m) and T’mond Johnson (20.20m) who came second and third respectively.
Chukwuebuka now holds the Nigeria Shot Put record indoors (21.20m) and outdoor (21.80m) and he is one of only two Nigerians to hit the 21+ mark in the event indoors and out.
Also at the weekend, Nigeria-born Irish athlete Rashidat Adeleke raced to a new 22.52 200m personal best and world lead at the Dr. Martin Luther King Collegiate Invitational on Saturday in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
She’s now the No. three performer in University of Texas history with the 4th-fastest performance.
At the Texas Tech Red Raider Open Favour Ofili ran a blistering 51.28 split leg to help Louisiana State University, LSU, place second (3:31.42) in the women’s 4x400m event behind Texas A&M (3:31.34).
Another Nigerian, Ella Onojuvwevwo was also in the LSU team.
