Dollar rain as Eagles get $20,000 for each goal in group phase
Eguavoen's history-equalling team to also get $50,000 for each round of 16 goal and $250,000 if they lift AFCON trophy
The Super Eagles have been promised millions of naira for every goal scored in the ongoing 33rd Africa Cup of Nations.
Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria made the promise on behalf of the coalition of private sector companies, CACOVID before the team defeated Guinea-Bissau 2-0 Wednesday evening in their final group game.
The Super Eagles have also been promised $250,000 if they win the AFCON title for the fourth time by business mogul, Femi Otedola.
‘I am here to deliver a message on behalf of CACOVID, the coalition of private sector companies that contributed to the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
‘CACOVID has asked me to tell you that you will earn the naira equivalent of $20,000 for every goal scored in the group phase.
“CACOVID has also promised a naira equivalent of $50,000 for every goal scored in the round of 16,’ said Emefiele who also revealed a $250,000 bonus if they win the trophy.
‘Femi Otedola, also a member of CACOVID says I should tell you the naira equivalent of $250,000 awaits you if you lift the AFCON 2021 trophy.’
The CBN governor said the players have made Nigerians proud by their conduct on and off the field of play and more Nigerians will appreciate their efforts.
So far the Super Eagles have earned the naira equivalent of $120,000 for the six goals they have scored in the competition so far.
The Super Eagles will know their round of 16 opponent after the concluding games of the group phase (groups E and F) are played Thursday. Nigeria will stay in Garoua to play the best third placed team in either group E or F.
