D’Tigress Finally Receive Tinubu’s $100,000 Presidential Reward
Nigeria’s D’Tigress have finally received the outstanding cash reward promised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following their historic triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) confirmed on Wednesday that the naira equivalent of $100,000 had been paid into the account of each player, while team officials received the equivalent of $50,000 each.
The payments were made on September 9, 2026, with the players and officials confirming receipt of the funds, according to the NSC.
The development brings to an end the outstanding financial component of the presidential reward package announced after D’Tigress won the 2025 AfroBasket title in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to become the first team in the history of the competition to win the championship five consecutive times.
The cash payment came after the team completed its campaign at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.
The NSC had earlier confirmed that the Federal Government had fulfilled the housing component of the reward, with players and officials receiving title documents for their three-bedroom apartments in Abuja, as well as certificates for the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) national honour.
With the latest payment, the Commission said all components of President Tinubu’s reward to D’Tigress have now been fully redeemed.
The presidential package comprised three-bedroom apartments in Abuja, national honours and the naira equivalent of $100,000 for each player and $50,000 for each official.
The NSC also confirmed that the Super Falcons are expected to receive their outstanding cash rewards following their triumph at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Like D’Tigress, the Falcons were promised three-bedroom apartments in Abuja, OON honours and cash rewards of $100,000 per player and $50,000 per official.
The Commission said the Falcons had already received the title documents for their Abuja apartments and certificates of national honours during the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco.
The final cash payments will complete President Tinubu’s reward package for the champions.
The latest development follows a September 4 meeting between NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele, during which the status of the outstanding presidential rewards was reviewed.
The Finance Ministry had confirmed that the housing payments were completed and that the cash component was moving through the final stages of processing.
The NSC thanked President Tinubu for his support for Nigerian sports and also acknowledged the roles played by the Ministry of Finance, the FCT Ministry, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation in completing the payment process.
The Commission said the implementation of the rewards was consistent with the Federal Government’s wider sports-development agenda and its Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE) framework.
