Eguavoen:I am focused on winning against Sudan
Nigeria and Sudan will meet on Saturday at Roumde Adjia Stadium in Matchday 2 of Group D of the Africa Cup of Nations and Nigeria’s caretaker manager Austin Eguavoen says his team will be looking for their second consecutive win to ensure their qualification to the round of 16 early.
The Super Eagles enter the game with high morale, especially after overcoming Egypt in the group top match, thanks to Kelechi Iheanacho stunner in the first half.
Eguavoen’s team set themselves among the favorites to go far, after the outstanding performance against the Pharaohs in the first match.
”I am happy with the players and their ability to give their best on the pitch. I am focused on winning against Sudan at the moment.”
”I am not thinking about anything else or how we will start our third match. We are completely focused on our match against Sudan. Beating Egypt was not easy, and we are looking forward to continuing our victories and qualifying for the next round,’ Eguavoen said.
Nigeria and Sudan are meeting for the third time at the Africa Cup of Nations, but it’s their first encounter at the tournament for 46 years. Sudan won the first match 4-0 in the 1963 group phase whilst Nigeria won the second 1-0 in 1976.
Nigeria won their opening game (1-0 against Egypt) to an Africa Cup of Nations for the second tournament running, having failed to win their first match in four of their previous five appearances (W1 D1 L3). The Super Eagles are looking to win their opening two matches to an Africa Cup of Nations in consecutive tournaments for the very first time.
