Ese Brume soars to a wind-aided 6.92m to make African Games history

Ese Brume has successfully defended her long jump title to become the second long jumper in Games history to do so after Modupe Oshikoya who won in 1973 and 1978.

The 28 year old leapt a wind-aided distance of 6.92m to win the gold ahead of Burkina Faso’s Kaola Marthe (6.81) and rising Nigerian sensation, 17 year old Prestina Ochonogor. Brume was however denied a new games record by the 3.9ms excessive tail wind which means the 6.79m record set in 2007 by South Africa’s Janice Josephs is still standing as the games record. The excessive tail wind has also denied her of the chance of becoming the second Nigerian long jumper after Ruth Usoro to meet the qualification standard for the Olympics in Paris, France in August.

Brume has however  become the ninth Nigerian woman to successfully defend an African Games title after Mary Onyali, Damola Osayomi, Fatima Yusuf, Tobi Amusan, Vivian Chukwuemeka, Modupe Oshikoya, Kelechi Nwanaga and Doreen Amata.
