Euromatch NPFL: Nzogbu, Nzogbu! Enyimba Enter Revival Mode As Rivers, Rangers Chase Top Spot

Enyimba will switch into revival mode on Wednesday when they host Shooting Stars in a rescheduled NPFL Matchday 2 fixture at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba, with four postponed fixtures set to reshape the top and bottom of the table.

The People’s Elephant go into the midweek encounter desperate for a first victory of the campaign after collecting just one point from their opening five matches.

Enyimba finally opened their points account on Sunday with a goalless draw against Kano Pillars in Katsina, ending a difficult run of four consecutive defeats. The result offered some relief, but the Aba giants remain bottom of the NPFL table.

Wednesday’s clash therefore presents Enyimba with another opportunity to begin climbing away from the foot of the table. A victory would lift the former champions off the bottom on goal difference.

Standing in their way are Shooting Stars, who are also looking to bounce back after losing 1-0 to Warri Wolves on Sunday. The Ibadan side currently sit 16th with six points from four matches.

Shooting Stars began the campaign with a 2-1 victory over Inter Lagos, lost to Plateau United and Warri Wolves, and recorded a 2-0 win over Katsina United before their latest setback.

For Enyimba, the home fixture comes at a critical stage of the season. Their three goals from five matches underline their struggles in front of goal, while their four defeats have left them five points behind Shooting Stars.

The clean sheet against Kano Pillars, however, could provide Emmanuel Deutsch’s side with a platform to start their revival.

But while attention will be fixed on Aba, the other three rescheduled Matchday 2 fixtures carry major implications at the top and around the top-four race.

At the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina United host Rivers United, with the visitors having the opportunity to move to the summit.

Rivers United currently occupy second place with 11 points from five matches, one point behind leaders Barau FC. A draw would be enough to take the Port Harcourt side top on goal difference, while victory would put them two points clear at the summit.

Rivers arrive in Katsina in strong scoring form after thrashing Kun Khalifat 5-0 in their last outing, but Katsina United will be looking to halt that momentum on home soil.

Defending champions Rangers International, meanwhile, travel to Ozoro to face Warri Wolves knowing that a victory could also send them to the top of the table if Rivers United fail to win.

Rangers are currently fourth on 10 points from five games. A win would move them to 13 points and, depending on the result in Katsina, either take them top or leave them second. The Flying Antelopes will also be eager to recover from Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Ikorodu City.

Warri Wolves, on 7 points, have their own incentive. Victory would take the Ozoro side to 10 points and put them within touching distance of the leading pack.

In Lagos, Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City will contest a derby with significant top-four implications.

Ikorodu City, currently on eight points, can move into the top four with victory, while Sporting Lagos can move closer to the leading positions with maximum points. Ikorodu City go into the game with confidence after their 2-0 victory over defending champions Rangers on Sunday.

All four matches kick off at 4pm on Wednesday, with the NPFL confirming the fixtures as the outstanding Matchday 2 games.

But in Aba, the biggest immediate concern is Enyimba’s fight to escape the bottom.

For the People’s Elephant, three points against Shooting Stars would not only deliver their first victory of the season but also provide an immediate lift from a difficult opening month.
