Euromatch NPFL Preview: Rangers Eye Oriental Derby Win To Maintain Top Spot

Enugu Rangers will put their early-season lead on the line when they face Oriental rivals Abia Warriors at the Awka Township Stadium on Sunday, with the defending champions looking to strengthen their grip on top spot in the Euromatch Nigeria Premier Football League.
Rangers lead the standings with 13 points from six matches, while Abia Warriors are 10th on eight points after two wins, two draws and two defeats.
The fixture has produced a closely fought rivalry, with Rangers holding a narrow 9-8 advantage over Abia Warriors in 22 meetings, alongside five draws. Rangers have also won their last three home meetings against their eastern rivals, scoring six goals and conceding two. Abia Warriors, however, last won away to Rangers in January 2023.
Rangers will be seeking another victory to maintain their position at the summit, while Abia Warriors will hope their 3-0 win over Bendel Insurance last time out can provide the momentum for another upset.
Rivers United Target Seventh Unbeaten Game
Second-placed Rivers United will also be looking to preserve their unbeaten start when Ikorodu City visit the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Rivers are just one point behind Rangers and have collected 12 points from six matches after three wins and three draws. They were held to a 1-1 draw by Katsina United in midweek but remain unbeaten this season.
Ikorodu City, meanwhile, occupy seventh place with nine points and arrive in Port Harcourt after a goalless draw with Sporting Lagos. They have also already shown their ability to trouble the big sides, beating Rangers 2-0 in their previous home fixture.
Rivers will therefore have to be at their best against an Ikorodu side still searching for its first away victory of the campaign.
Barau Face Tough Insurance Test
The battle near the top continues in Benin City, where unbeaten Barau FC face a difficult test against Bendel Insurance.
Barau have collected 12 points from six matches after three wins and three draws, but Insurance have been formidable at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, winning all three of their home games this season.
The fixture could therefore see one of two impressive records come under threat, with Barau seeking to preserve their unbeaten run and Insurance determined to maintain their perfect home record.
Enyimba Seek Back-To-Back Wins Against Plateau
In Aba, Enyimba will chase a second straight league victory when they welcome fourth-placed Plateau United to the Enyimba Stadium.
The People’s Elephant finally ended their long wait for a league win on Wednesday, beating Shooting Stars 4-2 in their rescheduled Matchday 2 encounter.
That victory followed a goalless draw against Kano Pillars and lifted Enyimba to four points from their last two matches, although they remain 19th in the table.
Plateau United will provide a stern test, having lost only once in six matches and sitting fourth with 11 points.
Struggling Tornadoes, Kun Khalifat Clash In Minna
Niger Tornadoes and Kun Khalifat will meet in Minna in a battle between two sides looking to escape the lower reaches of the table.
Tornadoes are 17th with five points after one win, two draws and three defeats, while Kun Khalifat occupy 18th on the same number of points.
Both sides need a victory to ease the pressure and begin climbing away from the relegation zone.
Inter Lagos Desperate For Turnaround
Inter Lagos will attempt to revive their campaign when they host Katsina United.
The newly promoted side have managed just one victory from six matches and sit bottom with four points. Their only success came away to Enyimba on Matchday 4, but they have since gone two matches without a win.
Katsina United, 11th with eight points, arrive in Lagos after holding Rivers United to a 1-1 draw in midweek.
Kwara, Ranchers Bees Battle For Top-Seven Push
Kwara United and Ranchers Bees will meet in Ilorin with both sides looking to move up the congested table.
Kwara occupy 12th position with seven points, while Ranchers Bees are 13th with the same tally, separated only by goal difference.
With just a few points separating several teams, victory could significantly improve the winner’s position and bring them closer to the top seven.
Doma United Seek First Win In Four
Doma United will be desperate to rediscover their early-season form when they host Warri Wolves in Gombe.
Doma were among the leading teams in the opening weeks and even occupied top spot before their recent slide. They have now gone three matches without a win but remain sixth with 10 points.
A victory against Warri Wolves could quickly revive their challenge among the leading sides, although the visitors will be looking to build on their own inconsistent start.
Warri Wolves are 15th with seven points.
Shooting Stars Defend Perfect Home Record
In Ibadan, Shooting Stars will look to put their midweek setback behind them when they host Nasarawa United at the Lekan Salami Stadium.
The Oluyole Warriors sit 16th with six points but have won both of their home matches this season.
They suffered a 4-2 defeat to Enyimba in their rescheduled Matchday 2 fixture in Aba and will now be looking for a response in front of their supporters.
Coach Salisu Yusuf will expect his players to maintain their perfect home record against a Nasarawa United side sitting 14th with seven points.
The fixture has also favoured Shooting Stars in recent meetings, with the Ibadan club winning their last two home encounters against Nasarawa United.
With the table still tightly packed, Matchday 7 could produce significant movement at both ends.
Rangers will be determined to protect top spot, Rivers United and Barau will look to maintain pressure on the leaders, while Enyimba, Shooting Stars, Inter Lagos and the other struggling sides face another opportunity to revive their campaigns.
