Croatia secured their place in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a battling 2-1 victory over Ghana at Philadelphia Stadium, a result that lifted Zlatko Dalić’s side into second place in Group L.
Goals from Petar Sucic and Nikola Vlasic sealed the win, with Sucic’s thunderous 30-yard strike breaking the deadlock in the 31st minute.
Ghana responded in the second half through Derrick Luckassen, who equalized from a free-kick in the 73rd minute. But Croatia’s determination shone through late on, as Vlasic rose unmarked to head home Luka Modrić’s corner in the 83rd minute, clinching the decisive goal.
The victory means Croatia leapfrog Ghana, who had already qualified, to finish runners-up in the group. They will now face the second-placed team from Group K in the round of 16.
At just 22 years and 245 days, Sucic became the second-youngest player to score for Croatia at a World Cup, following Josko Gvardiol’s strike against Morocco in 2022. His performance earned him the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match award.
Croatia’s intent was clear from the opening whistle, refusing to settle for a draw that would have sufficed for progression. Ghana, led by Carlos Queiroz, improved after the break but ultimately paid for lapses in defensive marking.
With England topping Group L and Panama eliminated, Croatia’s battling win sets up a compelling knockout clash, while Ghana advance as one of the best third-placed teams.
