Kane Breaks Lineker’s Record as England Advance

England ensured first place in Group L with a 2-0 victory over Panama at New York/New Jersey Stadium, thanks to second-half goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane.

After a frustrating opening period in rainy conditions, Bellingham broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute, volleying home from Bukayo Saka’s corner.

Just five minutes later, the England No10 turned provider, crossing for Kane to head his 11th World Cup goal, surpassing Gary Lineker’s previous national record.

Coach Thomas Tuchel had made five changes following the draw against Ghana, handing first starts in North America to Morgan Rogers, Marcus Rashford and Saka.

Rashford came closest in the first half, forcing a full-stretch save from Orlando Mosquera and heading narrowly over. Panama, meanwhile, threatened briefly through José Luis Rodríguez, whose powerful strike was turned behind by Jordan Pickford.

England’s persistence told after the break, with Mosquera denying Kane before Bellingham’s strike shifted the momentum.

Panama thought they had pulled one back late on through José Fajardo, but his effort was ruled out for offside. The Central Americans exit the tournament without a point or a goal, despite registering double figures in attempts during this match.

For England, the victory secures a Round of 32 tie in Atlanta on July 1 against a third-placed team from Group E, H, I, J or K.

Kane’s record-breaking goal adds another milestone to his career, while Pickford also made history by moving into outright second place on England’s all-time World Cup appearance list with his 15th outing, leaving only Peter Shilton ahead on 17.
