Former Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya athletics coach and manager, Walter Abmayr dies at 77

World renowned international road race organiser, coach and elite athletes’ manager, Walter Abmayr is dead.

Abmayr passed away unexpectedly on November 15, 2024, at the age of 77.

The German, who particularly known for his contributions to the development of track and field sports in Africa, was named the elite athlete manager for the fourth edition of the first World Athletics label Road race in Nigeria, the Okpekpe international 10km road race.

Abmayr had a long and distinguished career, working as a national coach in Nigeria and Ghana, and later in Kenya, where he trained many athletes who went on to become Olympians and world champions.

He also founded Afro-Sport Promotion with his wife Sylvia, which aimed to promote and develop young athletes in track and field athletics.

Abmayr also authored several athletics yearbooks, including the “ATFS Track and Field Best Performances Kenya 1986,” which documented and celebrated the achievements of Kenyan athletes.

His dedication and efforts have left a lasting impact on the sport, nurturing countless athletes and fostering a love for track and field in Africa.
