Former Nigeria Captain Andrew Uwe Named Senate President National Unity Cup Ambassador

Retired Nigerian footballer and former national team captain Andrew Uwe has been appointed the second ambassador of the 10th Senate President National Unity Cup, scheduled to hold in Akwa Ibom State.
The appointment was announced by the Grassroots Sports Federation, South-South (GRASOF), in partnership with the Office of the President of the 10th Senate, in recognition of Uwe’s contribution to grassroots football, leadership and youth development.
Born in Lagos, Uwe was discovered through the Principals Cup and YSFON competitions and progressed through Igbobi College and the University of Ibadan before establishing himself at national level.
As captain, he led the Flying Eagles to victory at the 1985 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations and a historic third-place finish at the 1985 FIFA U-20 World Cup. He also represented Nigeria at the 1988 and 1990 Africa Cup of Nations finals and the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.
Uwe’s professional career took him across Nigeria, Belgium, Germany and the United States, with one of his notable achievements coming in 1996 when he helped VfB Oldenburg secure promotion to the 2. Bundesliga.
Since retiring from playing, Uwe has continued his involvement in football through coaching. He holds a German Elite License and UEFA B License and has worked with youth teams in Germany. Since November 2020, he has served as Head Coach of Vandrezzer FC Academy in Nigeria, where he continues to mentor young players.
His appointment as ambassador adds another prominent voice to the Unity Cup’s grassroots development and youth empowerment objectives, with the competition expected to provide a platform for emerging football talents in Akwa Ibom State.
