Fraser-Pryce hoping for another big run as she opens season in Africa for second straight year

Jamaican, Kenya's Omanyala and Kirani James of Grenada confirmed for Botswana Golden Grand Prix

Like she did last year, multiple Olympic and world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce will seek a strong start to her season when she races at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix in Gaborone on 29 April.

The Jamaican who will be 37 in December opened 2022 with an incredible 10.67 run at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi to achieve the fastest ever women’s 100m season opener.

She went on to not only run six other sub 10.7 races in the course of the season but also win a fifth world 100m title at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon.

“I will be returning to Africa at the Botswana Continental Tour Gold track meet,” said Fraser-Pryce in a message to fans. “I am excited to be opening my season so you guys get to see me run fast and have fun.”

Also confirmed for the Botswana race is African record holder in the 100m, Ferdinand Omanyala and former Olympic and World 400m champion, Kirani James.

Omanyala who edged out Fred Kerley from the United States to win the 100m race at the Kip Keino Classic (9.85) last year says his fans should expect another fast race in Botswana.

“I am promising you a big show…I am coming to bring down the National Stadium in Gaborone down,” vowed Omanyala, the Africa 100m record holder in 9.77sec.
