Ghana to bid to host 2026 Senior African Athletics Championships
Bawa Fuseini, President of Ghana Athletics says his country will bid to host the 2026 Senior African Athletics Championship in 2026, according to Ghana’s media outlet, Joyonline.
This proposed bid is coming after the successful hosting of track and field events at the African Games at Legon Stadium.
According to Joyonline, the government of Ghana ‘spent $34 million on the renovation and completion of the facility prior to the Games’.
“[Legon athletic track] is one in its kind in Africa. Only Botswana and Kenya have this, even Morocco doesn’t have this one,’ JoySports reported Bawa as saying.
‘My prayer is that we should be able to keep it for a foreseeable future. We should be able to keep it good in two, three years’ time that we can request to host African championships, that is our next big thing we want to do.’
Ghana has never hosted the championships and if successfully, they could become the fourth West African nation after Senegal (1979 and 1998), Nigeria (1989 and 2018) and Republic of Benin (2012).
Mauritius hosted the last edition in 2022 while the 23rd edition will hold from June 19 to 23, 2024, in Douala, Cameroon.
