Harry Kane: We Have the Quality, But Need to Find the Missing Piece

England captain Harry Kane admitted he was devastated after the Three Lions suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final, insisting the team must find the final piece needed to turn strong tournament performances into major trophies.

England looked set to reach their first World Cup final in 60 years after taking the lead through Anthony Gordon, but Argentina produced a late comeback with goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lisandro Martinez to end England’s hopes.

Kane expressed his disappointment after the loss, praising the efforts of the players, coaching staff and supporters while acknowledging that England’s inability to maintain control after taking the lead proved costly.

‘I’m gutted for the team, the staff, the fans. We played a good game for the majority of it,’ Kane said. ‘When we went 1-0 up, we seemed to just try to hold on, which at this level is not enough.’

The England captain highlighted the team’s strong start, explaining how their aggressive pressing caused problems for the defending champions during the opening stages of the match.

‘In the first half and the start of the second half, we pressed them well. We put them under loads of pressure high up the pitch. That allowed us to win balls and control the game,’ he added.

However, Kane admitted that Argentina’s response after England’s goal changed the momentum of the contest, with the holders applying sustained pressure until they found a way back into the match.

‘After the goal, whether it was them putting more men forward or us just not being able to match them man for man, it was just wave after wave of Argentina attacks,’ he said. ‘Lads were putting blocks in but in the end it wasn’t enough.’

Despite the disappointment, Kane pointed to England’s progress in recent tournaments, noting another deep run on the world stage and urging the team to continue searching for the improvement needed to claim silverware.

‘We worked so hard to be here. The lads have given every bit of blood, sweat and tears. To fall short like we did is just gutting,’ he said.

‘We had a lot of good moments in this tournament. A lot of good games, another semi-final. We talk about knocking on the door. We’re close, we just need to find that missing piece in the final stage of the tournament.’
