‘Messi’s Even Better Than I Thought’: Gordon Hails Argentina Captain After England’s World Cup Exit

England forward Anthony Gordon has admitted that Lionel Messi surpassed his already high expectations after Argentina produced a dramatic late comeback to eliminate England from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Argentina came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory, scoring twice from the 84th minute onwards, with Messi providing the assist for both goals.

Gordon, who grew up watching Messi during his Barcelona years, said the experience of facing the Argentine legend left a lasting impression.

‘He’s even better than I thought,’ Gordon said, explaining that he had watched Messi throughout his career at Barcelona and had been mesmerised by his performances, including his displays against England.

Despite England’s disappointment at being knocked out, Gordon found a positive angle in the result, noting that the eventual World Cup champion would be a player with strong Barcelona connections.

‘At least the World Cup winner will be someone connected to Barcelona,’ he said.

Jude Bellingham also reflected on his exchange with Messi during the match after a minor disagreement over a foul.

‘It wasn’t anything serious,’ Bellingham said, while describing the opportunity to play against Messi as a privilege despite England’s defeat.

Messi’s two assists against England took his tournament tally to four, leaving him just behind Michael Olise in the assist standings. He is also level with France forward Kylian Mbappé in the Golden Boot race.

Argentina will now face Spain in the World Cup final, setting up a highly anticipated meeting between Messi and Barcelona’s teenage star Lamine Yamal.
