Idris Elba: ‘My Heart is African. I’m Watching Every Game’
Hollywood actor interrupts broadcast with FIFA World Cup message
Millions of viewers across Africa were stunned on 15 April 2026 when regular programming on DStv and GOtv was suddenly interrupted by Hollywood actor Idris Elba.
The award-winning star appeared on screens during prime-time, even cutting into live sports coverage, with a powerful message: ‘Everything else can wait.’
Elba’s surprise address marked a milestone for African football, as ten nations have qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the highest number in the tournament’s history.
‘There are ten of us now,’ Elba declared. ‘I honestly don’t care which one of us wins. I just want to see African football light up the world stage,’ said the actor, whose parents hail from Ghana and Sierra Leone.
‘My mum is from Ghana, my dad is from Sierra Leone. But my heart is African. That’s why I’m watching. Every. Single. Game,’ he added.
The expanded tournament, hosted across Mexico, Canada and the United States, will feature Ghana, South Africa, Senegal, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire and DR Congo.
DStv and GOtv, through SuperSport, will broadcast all 104 matches live across satellite and streaming platforms, including DStv Stream and GOtv Stream.
With local language commentary, pidgin coverage, and wide package availability, fans across the continent will be able to follow every match in a way that suits their lifestyle and budget.
