‘Inconclusive’ Audit Committee Report Listed In AFN Executive Board Meeting

The Audit Committee Report described as inconclusive by Tonobok Okowa, President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, is one of the issues listed in
the agenda of the Executive Board meeting of the federation scheduled to hold virtually on Saturday, January 6, 2024.

Also listed is the federation’s preparations for the African Games which will hold this March in Ghana.

These two items were listed by five board members as reasons they would not attend the meeting. The aggrived board members, as it were, also complained about
the less than 16 hours notice given by Okowa for the meeting.

Last week, Okowa, unilaterally described the report of the committee set up by an Executive Board resolution at its meeting of September 16, 2023 as
inconclusive and dead on arrival.

The report has now ressurrected and is listed as item number nine (Continuation of the Audit Report Deliberation) in the Executive Board meeting scheduled to
start at 4:00pm on Saturday.

Also last week, Tafida Gadzama, the AFN First Vice President, told Okowa in a press statement that the Delta state Sports Commission boss did not have the
power to unilaterally act on an Executive Board resolution.

Gadzama said in the statement the board agreed to shift deliberations on the report to the next meeting after a few members unsuccessfully tried to grant the
President discretionary power that is unknown to the AFN constituion (2023 as amended).

Reasons seem to have finally prevailed as the report is now listed on the agenda for the meeting on Saturday.

It is not yet clear if the meeting will hold as some board members have said they will boycott the meeting. Reports say about seven board members will not
join the virtual meeting which means the AFN will not be able to form a quorum for the meeting pursuant to article 15.4 of the federation’s constitution.
