Joe Aribo seeking to become the 14th Nigerian to score vs Chelsea in the Premier League
Super Eagles attacking midfielder Joe Aribo will be seeking to become the 14th Nigerian player to score against Chelsea in the Premier League when his club, Southampton host Thomas Tuchel’s side on Tuesday at Saint Mary’s stadium.
Aribo joined Southampton from Scottish Premiership side Rangers this season and the 26 year old has hit the ground running, scoring his first goal in the competition in his second game of the season against Leeds.
The Nigerian will be hoping for his third straight start in the competition and fourth in five appearances Tuesday night against Chelsea.
If he scores, Aribo will become the 14th Nigerian player to score against the West London side.
Former Arsenal star Kanu and former Norwich forward Efan Ekoku are the two Nigerian players who have scored more against Chelsea than any other Nigerian.
Both scored four goals each with Kanu scoring in 15 appearances against their London rival while Ekoku played just eight games against the Blues.
Aribo will be hoping to join the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi, Shola Ameobi, Emmanuel Dennis, Daniel Amokachi, Victor Anichebe, Odion Ighalo and Joseph Yobo who have scored just once in the Premier League against Chelsea.
Nigeria’s top scorer in the Premier League, Yakubu Aiyegbeni managed three goals in 13 appearances against Chelsea while Wilfred Ndidi is the top scoring Nigerian against the former European champions among the Super Eagles players currently playing in the Premier League.
