Leeds Vs Arsenal: Arteta gunning for Gunners’ history, eyes ninth win in 10 EPL games
To emulate Mourinho, Mancini, Guardiola and Klopp
Mikel Areta will be seeking to become the first Arsenal manager in Premier League history to win nine of his opening 10 Premier League games when he takes the Gunners to Elland to face Leeds United.
If he wins on Sunday, the Spaniard will not only be the first Arsenal manager to do so in the Premier League but also the fifth manager in the competition after Jose Mourinho with Chelsea (2005-06), Roberto Mancini with Man City (2011-12), Pep Guardiola (Man City, 2017/180 and Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp (2019/20).
Each of the last managers to win as many as nine of their opening 10 games in a Premier League season have gone on to win the title.
As a club, it will also be the Gunners’ best start to a league season for 119 years if they secure all three points at Elland Road.
Arsenal’s 3-2 defeat of Liverpool made it eight wins from nine Premier League games in the 2022-23 campaign, losing only to Manchester United.
A win at Leeds will mark only the second time in the Gunners’ history that they have recorded nine wins from their first 10 games of a league season.
The first Arsenal team to do so were the 1903-04 second division crop and were led by Harry Bradshaw to 10 wins from their opening 11 games of the season.
Barnsley were the only team to defeat Woolwich Arsenal in that period, and the Gunners finished second in the league that year – one point behind champions Preston North End and earning promotion in the process.
