Bayern goalkeeper reaches 164 appearances, trailing only Ronaldo and Casillas in the competition’s all-time rankings

Manuel Neuer has moved ahead of Lionel Messi in the all-time UEFA Champions League appearance rankings after making his 164th outing in the competition during Bayern Munich’s clash with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper started the high-profile encounter in the Spanish capital to move into third place on the all-time list, one appearance ahead of Messi, who has played 163 Champions League matches.
Neuer’s record includes 22 appearances for Schalke and 142 for Bayern Munich, where he has established himself as one of the most decorated goalkeepers in the competition’s history.
Only Cristiano Ronaldo and Iker Casillas have made more appearances than the German, with the former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward leading the standings on 183 games.
Casillas, another former Real Madrid goalkeeper, occupies second place with 177 appearances.
