New Super Eagle, Fernandez plays down Arsenal and Aston Villa links

Rangers centre-back Emmanuel Fernandez has dismissed speculation linking him with a summer move away from Ibrox, insisting his focus remains on winning the Premiership title.

The 24-year-old Nigeria international has enjoyed a breakout season, scoring six goals in 28 appearances and earning a place in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year. His rise has been rapid, having played for Peterborough United in England’s third tier less than a year ago.

Reports have credited Arsenal, West Ham United and Feyenoord with interest, but Fernandez made clear he is not distracted.

‘I don’t really read into stuff like that. I just like to focus on the job I’m doing here… right now, I am focused on taking it game by game, and winning the title, and bringing it back for this club because I love it here,’ he told reporters ahead of Rangers’ clash with Motherwell.

Pressed on his long-term future, Fernandez underlined his commitment to Rangers: ‘I haven’t heard anything. I see myself being here. I’ve still got four years left on my contract. Whether that’s to run down my contract, I’m happy I’m here. I’m happy to carry on being here.’
