NFF Suspends Referee Over Controversial Penalty in Enugu Rangers Vs Bendel Insurance NPFL Game

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has moved swiftly to sanction referee Yakubu Adamu, suspending him indefinitely after his controversial penalty decision during the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 37 clash between Enugu Rangers and Bendel Insurance at the Cathedral in Enugu.

The NFF’s Refereeing Development Committee announced the suspension following a review of the incident, concluding that the penalty awarded was inconsistent with the Laws of the Game.

The decision led directly to a goal and significantly influenced the outcome of the encounter, sparking outrage among fans and stakeholders.

In its statement, the committee stressed that Adamu’s action ‘brought the game into disrepute,’ warranting an indefinite ban pending further review.

This development adds to mounting concerns over officiating standards in the ongoing 2025/26 NPFL season.

Calls are growing louder for improved referee assessment, accountability, and the possible introduction of advanced officiating support systems to safeguard the integrity of the league.
