Odegbami plans to immortalize Lee Evans with Secondary Schools Athletics meet in Abeokuta Nov 24 and 25

Former Nigeria football great, Segun Odegbami is planning what he said will become the biggest international athletics meet for under-18 secondary school students in the world to immortalize athletics legend, the late Lee Evans.

Odegbami wrote in his column on Saturday in some major Nigerian newspapers that he has planning to celebrate Lee Evans annually.

Lee Evans, the two-time Olympic champion (400m and 4x400m in 1968) who set four world records in his career died in 2021 in Nigeria and was buried in the country as per his wish and that of his family .

The American worked at Odegbami’s International College and Sports Academy, SOCA, in Wasimi, Ogun state, South West Nigeria until his death.

According to Odegbami, he wants to also use the opportunity to celebrate Lee Evans to sustain and upgrade the athletics development program that the athletics legend began within SOCA.

‘I have already invited his assistant from the USA to Nigeria, as well as working towards the introduction of an annual international senior-secondary school athletics competition named after him to take place in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

‘The plan is to develop it into one of the biggest international athletics meet for under-18 secondary school students in the world. It all starts with a tentative first step, one that will take place on November 24 and 25, 2023, at the MKO Abiola Stadium, in Abeokuta.

‘Schools in Nigeria are being invited to register, to be a part of the event and be a part of history.

‘The next two weeks are going to be frenetic as I try to make that event happen,’ wrote Odegbami in his column.
