Okowa succeeds Gusau As President of African Athletics Region Two, West Africa

The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, Tonobok Okowa has been elected the President of African Athletics Region Two, West Africa.

He defeated his Benin Republic opponent Vierin De Gon by nine to six votes at an election held in Ghana on Saturday.

The victory earned him the position of one of the five Vice Presidents of the Confederation of African Athletics, CAA.

Okowa who became President of the AFN in June 2021 replacing Shehu Ibrahim Gusau whom he has also replaced both as the Region Two President and CAA Vice President.
Okowa, in his acceptance speech promised to make the zone the envy of all zones by providing purposeful leadership.

Since he became president of AFN, Okowa has led Nigeria to many unprecedented feats including a first ever Diamond League win, World outdoor title and record.

He also led the federation to an unprecedented haul of medals at the World U20 championships in 2021.

Athletics watchers in the zone believe Okowa was allowed to succeed another Nigerian because of the many successes he achieved as president of the AFN.
