Onyekwere battles Anumba for supremacy at 2023 USATF NYC Grand Prix

Reigning African and Commonwealth Games Discus Throw champion, Chioma Onyekwere will be up for a battle of supremacy with Anumba Ashley, her conqueror at the
21st National Sports Festival when they compete this weekend in the Discus event at the 2023 USATF NYC Grand Prix on Saturday.

Onyekwere made history at the Commonwealth Games last August in Birmingham when she made history as the first Nigerian woman to win a Discus Throw gold at
Games.

This came a few months after she successfully defended her African championships title in Mauritius.

However, the 28 year old surprisingly lost the National Sports Festival title to 24 year old Anumba.

Anumba followed it up with another win at the Tucson Elite Classic in Tucson, Arizona last month to go 2-1 up in their head-to-head ranking.

It was at the event the 24 year old joined the 60m+ group after throwing 60.97m to win with Onyekwere having no mark.

The first both clashed was at the 2019 African Games in Rabat where Onyekwere won the gold and Anumba placed fourth.

Like all true champions do, the Commonwealth Games champion bounced back to finish (4th) ahead of Anumba (10th) at the USATF Throws Festival at the Tucson
Elite Classic aday after the latter threw 60.97m to win at the same venue.

Tied at 2-2, both Onyekwere and Anumba will be seeking to go one better in New York and both are in form with the African champion throwing 64.96m at the
Millican Field at Throw Town in Ramona, Oklahoma last April to set a new African record.

Meanwhile, Nigeria and African Shot Put champion, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will be aiming to throw better than his 21.69m personal season’s best as he continues
his preparation for August’s World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
