Osimhen set to make history as first African to be crowned top scorer in a single Serie A season
Nigerian certain to also become first Napoli player to end a Serie A season as top scorer and Scudetto winner
Victor Osimhen looks certain to be crowned the top scorer in the Serie A this season after his nearest challenger, Lautaro Martinez fired blanks in the 55 minutes he was on the pitch at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino where his side, Inter Milan pipped Ola Aina’s Torino 1-0 to end the domestic season on a high.
Osimhen tops the Serie A scoring chart with 25 goals in 31 games while Martinez, his nearest challenger has netted 21 times in 37 matches.
Boulaye Dia of relegated Salernitana is in third position with 16 goals in 33 matches.
Osimhen will thus make double history after the game against Sampdoria on Sunday as the first African man to end a single Serie A season as its top scorer.
He will also become the first Napoli player to end a Serie A season as top scorer and Scudetto winner, a feat the great Diego Maradona could not achieve despite leading the club to Serie A titles.
The duo of Edinson Cavani and Gonzalo Higuain also failed to achieve the feat despite ending the season as Serie A top scorer during their time in Italy.
The 24 year old Nigerian has already been crowned the best striker in the competition this season and became the top scoring African in a single Serie A season and the best top scoring African in competition history in the course of the season.
Osimhen surpassed Samuel Eto’o as the top scoring African in a single Serie A season after netting more than the 21 goals the Camerounian scored in the 2010/11 season.
He supplanted George Weah as the top scoring African in Serie A after scoring more than the 46 goals the Liberian netted for AC Milan.
The Nigerian’s tally of 49 goals in 82 games is the most scored by an African in the history of the competition.
