President Tinubu Hails Team Nigeria’s Historic Wrestling Triumph
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria on winning a record 15th continental title at the 2026 African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt.
Nigeria’s women’s team dominated with 8 gold and 2 silver medals from 10 events, while the overall tally stood at 9 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals across categories.
The President described the achievement as a testament to consistency, discipline, and national pride.
He singled out Mercy Genesis, Adijat Idris, Esther Asaolu, and Mercy Adekuoroye for their skillful performances, while also commending Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo for his confident victory in the men’s freestyle.
Other contributors, including Ebierelayefa Andrew, Stephen Akintewe, Dideikemei Erefagha, Solomon Ulabo, and Saviour Egoli, were praised for their collective effort.
President Tinubu noted that the success reflects Nigeria’s evolving sports ecosystem, emphasizing structured preparation and long-term athlete development.
He credited the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, led by Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for sustaining Nigeria’s dominance.
‘This is how a sporting nation grows,’ Tinubu said, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sports as a platform for national unity, youth empowerment, and global representation.
The President urged the wrestlers to remain disciplined as they prepare for future competitions, stressing that their triumph carries meaning beyond the podium.
