Rivers Hoopers’ Homegrown Heroes Savour Historic NPBL Triumph

Rivers Hoopers’ seventh Nigeria Premier Basketball League (NPBL) title has given four of the club’s homegrown players their first taste of championship glory, with Eric Okechukwu, Chinedu Nwaogu, Tom Aroko and John Idoga reflecting on a landmark season that also secured the KingsMen’s return to the Basketball Africa League (BAL).

The quartet played different roles in the Port Harcourt club’s successful campaign, providing the domestic backbone behind their reclamation of national supremacy.

While the team’s international recruits attracted attention with their performances and statistics, the contributions of the home-based players proved vital as Rivers Hoopers navigated the qualifying phases in Ibadan and Enugu before completing their championship run in the playoffs and Finals.

Okechukwu and Aroko provided energy, vocal leadership and support after missing out on the playoffs roster, while Idoga and Nwaogu made important contributions on the court.

Idoga brought defensive intensity through relentless ball pressure and added crucial points in the paint, while Nwaogu, nicknamed Sniper for his long-range shooting, emerged as a key scoring option off the bench with timely perimeter shooting.

For Okechukwu, the title represented the fulfilment of a career ambition after several years in the league.

‘Winning the 2026 NPBL title was one of my main goals for the year, and to achieve it with Rivers Hoopers means a lot,’ he said. ‘I’ve played in this league for several years, preparing for a moment like this. To finally call myself a champion and lift that trophy is a special feeling.’

He added that the journey demanded patience, sacrifice and perseverance, while describing the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the BAL as an added reward.

‘This isn’t the end, it’s a stepping stone. I’m grateful for my first championship, but I’m definitely not satisfied with just one,’ Okechukwu said.

Aroko, who joined Rivers Hoopers this season after previously featuring for Kwara Falcons, also celebrated his maiden NPBL crown, highlighting the relationships he built with teammates and the coaching staff during the title-winning campaign.

‘I feel elated winning the title with an organization like Rivers Hoopers,’ he said. ‘For me, it’s not just about winning the league—it’s about the people: the teammates I’ve played with, the coaching staff, and the incredible experience of playing for Port Harcourt.’

The forward said winning the championship in only his second league season had strengthened his determination to achieve more success with the club.

For Nwaogu, the triumph helped ease the disappointment associated with previous playoff campaigns. Although he was not part of the team when Rivers Hoopers lost the championship last season, he said he understood the pain of that defeat.

‘Coming here this year and winning it proves that hard work really pays off,’ he said. ‘Now that I’ve experienced what it takes to become a champion, the goal is to keep improving, stay hungry, and win many more trophies with Rivers Hoopers.’

Idoga, meanwhile, credited the collective commitment of the squad, including its foreign players, as well as the support of the Port Harcourt fans.

‘The fans in Port Harcourt are amazing on and off the court. But most importantly, my teammates, the foreign players and us homies, everyone put their one percent on the line for the team to stand strong,’ he said.

The seventh NPBL title has reinforced Rivers Hoopers’ status as one of Nigerian basketball’s leading clubs and earned them another opportunity to compete on the continental stage.
