Roman Abramovich Gives Up Control Of Chelsea

Roman Abramovich has announced that he is giving up control of Chelsea, handing it over to the trustees of the club’s charitable foundation.

The Russian bought the English club in 2003, but has been under scrutiny in recent days because of his links to the Russian government that has this week invaded Ukraine.

“During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities,” Abramovich said in a statement released on Chelsea’s website.

“I have always taken decisions with the club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values.

“That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea.

“I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the club, players, staff, and fans.”

The announcement came one day before Chelsea’s Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley.

During his time as owner of the club, Chelsea won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, two Community Shields, two Champions Leagues, two Europa Leagues, one UEFA Super Cup and one Club World Cup. That’s a total of 21 titles.
