‘Still The Best Man for The Job’: FA Back Tuchel to Continue as England Head Coach

Thomas Tuchel will remain England manager despite growing criticism of his tactics following the Three Lions’ 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the World Cup semi-final.

The Football Association continues to back the German coach, who is expected to remain in charge through the 2028 European Championship.

Tuchel’s tactical decisions during England’s defeat have come under intense scrutiny, particularly after the Three Lions surrendered a lead in the closing stages of the match.

Anthony Gordon put England ahead early in the second half as the team looked to reach its first men’s World Cup final since 1966. However, Argentina fought back to score twice late in the match and secure a place in the final.

Despite the disappointment, the FA has no plans to dismiss Tuchel. The governing body handed the manager a contract extension before the World Cup, with the new agreement covering the upcoming European Championship, which will be hosted by England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

The contract is understood to contain performance-related clauses that could reduce compensation if certain targets are not met.

Tuchel and the England squad returned to their Kansas City base following the heartbreaking defeat in Georgia, where FA chief executive Mark Bullingham praised the manager, players and coaching staff for their efforts throughout the tournament.

‘It is heartbreaking to be so close,’ Bullingham said. ‘The players and Thomas gave it everything today and the squad, coaches and staff could not have worked harder during the tournament.

‘I would like to thank them all, and also give my heartfelt thanks to our wonderful fans here in the USA and at home. We felt your support every step of the way and we are all so disappointed not to go further.’

Despite the disappointment of another major tournament exit, the FA has chosen continuity, with Tuchel set to lead England into the next phase of preparations for Euro 2028.
