UPDATED: Ogunlewe runs fastest legal 100m time by a Nigerian in over 30 days, equals personal best
Three-time national 100m champion also sets new personal best in 200m
Seye Ogunlewe ran an inspiring 10.03 seconds to equal his lifetime best Sunday at the Resisprint La Chaux-de-Fonds 2024 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.
The 32 year old who was denied a place in Nigeria’s track and field team to the Paris Olympics by the Athletics federation of Nigeria, AFN, despite fulfilling all conditions set by World Athletics and the Nigerian federation, is now the fastest Nigerian in the event since Favour Ashe and Kanyinsola Ajayi ran 9.99 and 10.01 respectively to finish second and third in the NCAA outdoor championships on June 7, 2024.
Ogunlewe has been consistent since he turned 31, running inside 10.1 seconds four times last year including running a 10.03 lifetime best at the Yabatech Sports ground in Lagos.
The son of a Lagos-born former senator and works and housing minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Ogunlewe has now equaled his lifetime best to prove he is the most on-form sprinter Nigerian has going to the Olympics.
A day earlier, the duo of Ajayi and Ashe ran at the Moore-Guldensporenmeeting, Sportcentrum Wembley in Kortrijk, Belgium with Ajayi, the reigning Nigerian champion running 10.17 to win ahead of Ashe who ran 10.31.
Oghenebrume was not in action but the 21 year old’s last race was the 10.51 he ran at the African Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameeroon where he finished third in his opening round heat and could thus not qualify for the semifinal.
Ogunlewe also set a new 2.45 personal best at the same event.
