Spain’s national team remains unbeaten at the FIFA World Cup after two matches, with one victory and one draw, consolidating their position near the top of Group H.
Their latest result, a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia, showcased goals from Lamine Yamal, Mikel Oyarzabal (twice), and an own goal by Abdulelah Al-Tambakti.
Head coach Luis de la Fuente used the occasion to defend his squad against ongoing criticism.
‘It’s crazy to keep questioning this team,’ he said, pointing to Spain’s unbeaten run as proof of their resilience.
‘We needed to rediscover our best sensations, but we still have to keep improving if we want to reach the final on 19 July. We are happy, and it is all thanks to this team’s responsibility and ambition.’
De la Fuente praised the group’s spirit, describing them as ‘a very healthy group with a commendable attitude.’ He noted that the players responded to the challenges of the opening match with pride, adding: ‘The analysis is very positive and gives us calm and confidence,’ he told Spain’s official website.
On individual performances, he highlighted Lamine Yamal’s maturity: ‘With the result under control, we decided to rest him. He was fit to play more minutes, but it was important for him to recover and finish the match with such good feelings.’
Mikel Oyarzabal’s impact was historic.
‘It is the first time in history that a player has recorded two goals and an assist in a match of this level. We strongly recognise Mikel Oyarzabal as a player capable of writing an exceptional chapter with the national team.’
De la Fuente also lauded Rodri as ‘the best in the world in his position,’ and praised Álex Baena for providing width and interior play that proved decisive on the flanks.
