Eguavoen: We want to finish AFCON 2025 qualifiers undefeated

Super Eagles caretaker coach, Austin Eguavoen says he and the players are focused on ending their qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations undefeated after securing a 1-1 draw against the Cheetahs of Republic of Benin in Abidjan on Thursday night.

The Nigerians secured the ticket to their 21st appearance in the competition about one hour before the kickoff of their game following Libya’s 1-0 defeat of Rwanda at the Amahoro stadium in Kigali.

Eguavoen admitted after the game the heavy downpour before the game did not help his side but expressed delight that his side put up a good display in the second half after their host scored in the first half.

‘It was a tough game, and I congratulate the players for a spirited display in the second half that earned us the equalizer. The downpour made the game difficult for both teams, but I am happy we have the AFCON finals ticket in the bag ahead of the final game of the series against Rwanda in Uyo on Monday,’ Eguavoen said.

The 1994 AFCON winner says the next target is to end their campaign undefeated after conceding their first goal in the qualifiers.

‘Coming into this game, we haven’t lost a game, we wanted to maintain that and try to win the game, worst case scenario a draw. We wanted to qualify without losing a game. And we knew what we are capable of, we have the qualities; we have what it takes to beat anybody, anytime.

Nigeria now has 11 points from five matches in the qualifiers, comprising three wins and two draws. They face Rwanda who will be desperate for points at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Monday.
