Osimhen’s Absence Exposes Galatasaray’s European Problem

Victor Osimhen’s absence has once again exposed Galatasaray’s attacking struggles in Europe after the Turkish champions suffered a 3-1 defeat to Sporting Lisbon in their opening Champions League fixture.

The Nigerian striker missed the game after sustaining an injury during Galatasaray’s recent Süper Lig clash against Başakşehir, leaving coach Okan Buruk without arguably his most important attacking weapon.

According to reports in the Turkish media, Galatasaray have struggled badly in Europe whenever Osimhen has been unavailable, with their inability to convert chances becoming a recurring problem.

The defeat to Sporting followed earlier European setbacks against Eintracht Frankfurt and Union Saint-Gilloise when the Nigerian was also absent.

Galatasaray were also held to draws by RFS and Malmö in matches in which Osimhen did not feature, failing to capitalise on scoring opportunities or protect their advantages.

The statistics underline the difference Osimhen makes to the Turkish champions, particularly in the opposition penalty area, where Galatasaray’s attacking effectiveness has dropped significantly without him.

Osimhen himself demonstrated his importance in last season’s European campaign, scoring Galatasaray’s only goal in a 1-1 draw against AZ Alkmaar on November 28, 2024.

The Nigerian has become a key figure in Galatasaray’s attacking system since joining the club, providing not only goals but also pace, physical presence and a constant threat to opposing defenders.

His latest injury has therefore heightened concerns among Galatasaray supporters, who will be hoping for a swift return as the club looks to recover from its disappointing Champions League start.
