Sevilla coach hails Adams and Ejuke’s sacrifice after AFCON 2025 return

Sevilla manager Matías Almeyda has praised Super Eagles duo Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke for their ‘sacrifices’ and ‘commitment’ to the club after returning immediately from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco without visiting their families.

Adams and Ejuke were the first Nigerian internationals to report back to their club following Nigeria’s third-place finish against Egypt last Saturday.

Their swift return proved crucial, with Adams making an instant impact in Sevilla’s 2-2 draw against Elche.

Coming on as a substitute, Adams inspired a dramatic comeback for the relegation-threatened side. He pulled a goal back in the 75th minute before netting again in stoppage time to secure Sevilla’s first La Liga point since December.

Ejuke also contributed to the fightback, helping Almeyda’s side end their losing streak.

Reflecting on their dedication, Almeyda was full of admiration. ‘I appreciate the commitment of Akor and Ejuke, who were here without seeing their families,’ he said.

The Argentine coach stressed the importance of their presence in the squad, highlighting the morale boost their return provided.

‘The lads who are coming back from the cup are a real boost for us. I have to thank them for their commitment; they didn’t see their families and came here. I place tremendous importance on them giving up their vacations to be here helping each other,’ Almeyda added.
