Real Madrid Delay Barcelona’s Title Party with Espanyol Victory

Real Madrid kept the La Liga title race alive for at least another week after defeating Espanyol 2-0 away in the 34th round of the season.

Vinícius Júnior was the hero of the night, scoring twice in the 55th and 66th minutes to secure the win.

The result lifts Madrid to 77 points, narrowing the gap to leaders Barcelona to 11. Had Los Blancos dropped points, Barcelona would have already been crowned champions. Espanyol, meanwhile, remain on 39 points.

All eyes now turn to Camp Nou on May 10, where Barcelona host Real Madrid in a decisive El Clásico.

A draw or victory for Barcelona will officially seal their championship in front of their home supporters.

Vinícius Júnior’s form has been remarkable in 2026, with 15 goals in 26 matches across all competitions, the joint-highest tally in La Liga this year alongside Lamine Yamal.

Only Harry Kane has scored more (24) among Europe’s top five leagues.
