Ajayi Drawn with Eseme, Bednarek in Silesia Diamond League Semi-final

Nigeria’s Kanyinsola Ajayi has been drawn in the same 100m semi-final heat as his Commonwealth Games conqueror Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon and American Kenneth Bednarek at the Silesia Diamond League meeting in Poland on Sunday.
Ajayi, who will be looking to strengthen his bid for a place in the Wanda Diamond League Final, has been handed lane four, with Eseme in lane three and Bednarek in lane five.
The Nigerian will face further strong opposition from Canada’s Andre De Grasse and Americans Trayvon Bromell and Sam Blaskowski, while Poland’s Dominik Kopeć completes the field. Kopeć is the only athlete in the heat yet to break 10 seconds this season or in his career.
The top three finishers in each semi-final will qualify automatically for the final, with the three fastest non-automatic qualifiers from the two heats also advancing.
Ajayi’s attention, however, will not be limited to his own race. The 21-year-old will also be watching the opening semi-final closely, with the result potentially determining his chances of reaching the Diamond League Final in Brussels.
Ajayi currently has eight points in the Diamond League standings, while Seville Oblique of Jamaica and South Africa’s Akani Simbine are both on 15 points. The Nigerian can potentially move to 16 points if he wins the Silesia final, but Seville and Simbine qualifying for the final would put them in a strong position to remain ahead of him.
If either athlete qualifies for the final, a finish between first and seventh would be enough to keep them ahead of Ajayi. That would leave the Nigerian needing a withdrawal or a wild card to secure his place in Brussels.
After a breakthrough season that has included major victories, Ajayi now faces a crucial day in Silesia, where both his performance and the results of his rivals could determine whether his Diamond League campaign continues into the final.
