Amusan, Ofili break African 60m hurdles and 300m record in Boston!

Tobi Amusan ran inside eight seconds for the second time in one week to set a new African 60m hurdles record at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, USA.

The 26 year old ran 7.75 seconds to rewrite the 7.77 seconds African record she set last week in Astana, Kazkhastan.

The Nigerian was however beaten to first place by American Tia Jones who ran a world leading 7.72. It was also the meeting
rcord and her lifetime best.

Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton, the world leader at 7.75 last week ran 7.76 to place third.

Amusan will be aiming to become the first Nigerian athlete, man or woman to be crowned world indoor and outdoor champion
when she competes at the World Indoor Championships next month in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Nigerian won the world outdoor title two years ago in Oregon, USA, setting a 12.12 seconds world record along the way.

Like Amusan, Favour Ofili also sped into African record books in the 300m indoors.

The 21 year old ran a lifetime best of 35.99 to finish second in the women’s 300m behind USA’s Gabby Thomas and has now

supplanted Botswana’s Amantle Montsho (36.33) as African record holder and Charity Opara (36.53) as the Nigerian record
holder.

Ofili now holds the African indoor record in the 200m (22.11) and the 300m. She is also the Nigerian outdoor record holder
in the 200m.

Meanwhile, in the long jump event, the Nigerian duo of Ese Brume and Ruth Usoro finished third and fourth respectively.

Brume jumped 6.58m on her fifth attempt but it was not enough to overhaul Tara Davis-Woodhall’s 6.86m world lead and
meeting record as well as Quanesha Burks’ 6.64m effort.

Usoro had only two legal jumps out of six and the two were under 6.50m with 6.47m her best on the day.
