Amusan Thrilled with Podium Finish Despite Jetlag in Shanghai Diamond League Opener
‘I am just incredibly excited to have finished in the top three,’ said Nigeria’s sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan after clocking 12.41 seconds to secure third place at the opening leg of the 2026 Diamond League in Shanghai.
Amusan, who arrived from Accra on the morning of the meet, admitted that jetlag and fatigue were her biggest challenges.
‘I just arrived this morning and was exhausted. But the result was fabulous. Everyone is looking forward to the World Ultimate Championships, and so am I.
‘Placing third today is a great season opener, I am looking forward to the upcoming meetings of this season,’ she added.
The race was headlined by Olympic champion Masai Russell, who stormed to victory in a world-leading 12.25 seconds, setting a new meeting record.
Devynee Charlton, the reigning world indoor champion and record holder over 60m hurdles, followed closely in 12.38 seconds to claim second place.
Amusan’s podium finish, achieved under difficult travel circumstances, sets a promising tone for her season as she eyes the upcoming World Ultimate Championships.
